How to use an otoscope
Introductions This instruction manual will teach you to use the Notoco’s pocket otoscope. An otoscope is used to see into the ear canal and view the ear drum. The purpose of looking into one’s ear is to help determine whether or not they have any abnormalities. Certain types of abnormalities could cause a hearing loss or an ear infection. Otoscopes are used mainly by audiologists and nurses. However, speech pathologists may also use otoscopes if they suspect there may be outer ear pathology. If outer ear pathology is suspected then speech pathologists will refer patients to a doctor or audiologist for further treatment. This instruction manual will begin with a diagram of the parts of the otoscope. Then these instructions will let you know what materials are needed. The last two steps will be specific directions and tips on any possible problems you may encounter. It is important when using an otoscope, to make sure you do not push the specula (figure a) too far into the ear canal. By doing this, you could push ear wax further into the ear or rupture the ear drum. Pocket otoscopes are fragile and should be stored in their protective cases when they are not in use. Equipment Notoco’s Pocket Otoscope Model 1205 Materials Needed You will need your Notoco’s Pocket Otoscope and you will also want alcohol swabs. It is important to wash off the specula after every use to avoid transferring germs from one person to another. Directions Once you are familiar with your otoscope it is time to look into an ear. Preparing the otoscope: • Twist the otoscope counter clockwise 180 degrees at the screw joint. A light should emit through the opening on the specula. This light will help you see into the ear canal more clearly. How to hold the otoscope: • Pick up the otoscope with your dominant hand and hold it facing downward like a pencil. Looking into the ear: • Brace your non dominant hand on the patients forehead and place the specula of the otoscope into the opening of their ear. • With the specula in their ear, look through the lens and observe what you see. There will be hair and ear wax. You should also be able to see the ear drum. • If you are looking in the ear and it is dark or you are not seeing anything, remove otoscope slightly. The darkness may be caused by the tip of the specula being pressed into the canal wall or against the ear drum itself. Troubleshooting If you are having trouble turning the light on, check if you need new batteries or if the light bulb is burnt out. To change the batteries, twist the screw joint clockwise until the batteries appear. To change the lightbulb, twist off the head of the otoscope until the light bulb appears. |
Unsolicited Proposal
Maurices To: Kim Costello From: Andrea Haugen Date: November, 8 2013 Re: Proposal to purchase wireless walkie-talkies I propose to upgrade our walkie-talkies to wireless. Since our store has started using walkie-talkies, our theft has decreased by 18%. However, the wires on them are very inconvenient. Wireless walkie-talkies will help employees continue to keep up with the current fashion while still being able to communicate with each other. Wired walkie-talkies also contribute to accidents as the wires get caught on clothing racks and can cause ear phones to be ripped out. Problem Maurices is currently using wired walkie-talkies that enable the employees to communicate with one another. The problem with these walkie-talkies is that the wire wraps around the body and gets tangled in clothing and racks. When the walkie-talkie cord is hanging down the front of the body along with our name tags and it makes it difficult to wear accessories because they continuously tangle. Another problem with our walkie-talkies is that our store has not been supplied with enough for every worker. To ensure that our decrease in theft remains consistent we must be sure that all of our employees are able to communicate when they need to. Therefore, we need to equip every employee with a walkie-talkie. Objective With wireless walkie-talkies, employees will no longer have to worry about a wire getting caught and tangled. Solution I propose we invest in Wsound walkie-talkies. These wireless walkie-talkies allow over 15 hours of usable time before having to be recharged. The ear piece allows for a sleek less visible headset. There is also a volume button on the side of the earpiece in case some employees need to have a louder setting. The Wsound walkie-talkies are made by Shenzhen Boheng. This company has the highest reviews from customers. To be able to give every employee their own device, I am asking that our store receives 12 walkie-talkies. The benefit of each employee having their own will enhance communication throughout the store. It will also enable us to have our full staff equipped on the busy holidays when we have every employee working, such as Black Friday. Method As soon as corporate approves, I will contact Shenzhen Boheng and place an order. Instructions are sent along with the product. Once the walkie-talkies arrive I will show step-by-step tutorials to all employees. Resources The only resources that are needed will be the walkie-talkies and their charging pods. Schedule Once I have placed the orders, product should arrive within 2-4 weeks. Once they have arrived I will give instructions to the employees. Since we have all used walkie-talkies before, I foresee the entire instruction process to last 15 minutes per employee. Qualifications I have been employed as a assistant manager at Maurices for 5 years. Throughout these years I have been in charge of setting up our original walkie-talkie system. I have also been trained on other electronic devices throughout the store such as the iPad and the registers. Therefore, I am capable of providing instruction for a new technology device. Costs The walkie-talkies will be a one time cost. Each walkie-talkie is $199. To supply the whole store with them it will cost the company approximately $2,388. When you factor in the amount of money the store is saving through loss prevention, this is a positive investment. There would be no time cost to add for training because each employee will be briefed at the beginning of their shift. Conclusion I believe that the Wsound walkie-talkies would make a positive impact at Maurices. This product will allow Maurices employees to communicate more effectively which will also help the company reduce the risk of theft throughout the stores. |
